How to Replace a Toilet Handle

1. Knowing what kind of toilet handle you need is step one in replacing a toilet handle. To find out the brand, model, and make of your toilet, look at the handle. If you can't locate the details, your neighborhood hardware store should be able to provide you with a universal flush handle.
   
   
2. Recite steps 1-4 from the previous section. Turn off the water supply, remove the tank cover, close the toilet seat cover, and flush the toilet.
   
   
3. Take the chain clip off. You can find the flush handle inside the toilet tank, along with a chain or wire that is connected to it. The flapper valve is attached to the chain's other end. The "chain clip" is the device used to secure the chain. Cut the clip.

6. Remove the replacement handle's mounting nut. This is typically seen on the handle's bottom. To prevent losing it, unscrew it and store it somewhere secure
   
   
7. Insert the fresh mounting nut. The replacement mounting nut should be hand-screwed on slowly. Avoid overtightening as this could harm the handle
   
   
8. Place the new handle through the tank's opening. Once it's snug, gently push it in. If the handle is universal, you might need to cut the shaft to size.
   
   
9. Secure the chain again. Connect the flapper valve to one end of the chain or wire, and the new handle to the other. To prevent the chain from being pulled too tightly when you flush, make sure there is some slack in the chain.
   
   
10. Start the water system. By turning the shut-off valve handle in the opposite direction, you can refill the tank with water.
    
    
11. To test the new handle, flush the toilet. If everything goes smoothly, you're done. Congratulations!
